Recertification Checklists

Computer-Based Examinations

  1. Maintain a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine and have hospital or surgical center privileges.
  2. Submit and be approved for 240 orthopaedic Category I CME credits that include a minimum of 40 Self-Assessment Examination (SAE) credits.
  3. Submit a Case List.
  4. Apply online and submit Application Fee by December 1. (Late deadline of December15.)
  5. Receive letters of notification of admission to Examination.
  6. Pay Examination Fee.
  7. Receive a Scheduling Permit and schedule Examination.
  8. Take Examination at Pearson Vue Test Centers.
  9. Results posted on your Diplomate Dashboard.

Oral Examination

  1. Maintain a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine and have hospital or surgical center privileges.
  2. Submit and be approved for 240 orthopaedic Category I CME credits that include a minimum of 40 Self-Assessment Examination (SAE) credits.
  3. Submit a Case List.
  4. Apply online and Application Fee by December 1. (Late deadline of December 15.)
  5. Receive letter of notification of admission to Examination.
  6. Upload images and arthroscopic prints and pay Examination Fee. List of 12 cases posted at abos.org in April.
  7. Admission Cards posted at abos.org in June.
  8. Oral Recertification Examination at Palmer House in Chicago in July.
  9. Exam posted in August on your Diplomate Dashboard.

ABOS Web-Based Longitudinal Assessment (ABOS WLA)

  1. Maintain a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine and have hospital or surgical center privileges.
  2. Knowledge Sources are posted in January to choose and study.
  3. Assessment Window to answer questions is April 4-May 23. Pay assessment fee prior to answering first question.
  4. Submit and be approved for 240 orthopaedic Category I CME credits that include a minimum of 40 Self-Assessment Examination (SAE) credits.
  5. Submit a Case List. You can submit it in Years 4-9 (Your choice, same year as your Application).
  6. Apply online and submit Application Fee by December 1 of Years 4-9. (Your choice for which year you submit it. Late deadline of December 15.)
