American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery

Board of Directors

The Board consists of 21 members which include 12 Directors, six Senior Directors, two Directors-Elect, and one Public Director. All Directors  serve one seven-year term with most serving an additional three years as Senior Directors. The Public Director may serve two three-year terms.

Nominations come from the American Orthopaedic Association, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and the American Medical Association. Each organization nominates four physicians two out of every three years and the Board elects one candidate from each slate.

Douglas W. Lundy, MD, MBA

Douglas W. Lundy, MD, MBA, is President of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Lundy was elected to the Board in 2012 and has served as Treasurer and Chair of the ABOS Oral Examinations Committee. He is Co-President of Resurgens Orthopaedics in Atlanta, Georgia, where he specializes in orthopaedic trauma surgery.

Charles L. Saltzman, MD

Salt Lake City, UT | Vice President

Charles L. Saltzman, MD, is Vice President of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Saltzman was elected to the Board in 2012 and has served as Secretary and as Chair of the ABOS Credentials and Research Committees. He is Chair of Orthopaedics and the LS Peery Presidential Endowed Professor at the University of Utah, where he specializes in foot and ankle surgery.

Rick W. Wright, MD

Rick W. Wright, MD, is President-Elect of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Wright was elected to the Board in 2014 and has served as Chair of the ABOS Written Examination Committee. He is the Jerome J. Gilden Distinguished Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Executive Vice Chairman, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Washington University, where he specializes in orthopaedic sports medicine.

Joshua J. Jacobs, MD

Joshua J. Jacobs, MD, is Secretary of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Jacobs was elected to the Board in 2016 and currently serves as Chair of the ABOS Oral Examination Committee. He is the William A. Hark, MD and Susanne G. Swift Professor and Chair of Orthopedic Surgery at Rush University Medical Center, where he specializes in adult reconstruction surgery.

Frederick M. Azar, MD

Frederick M. Azar, MD, is Treasurer of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Azar was elected to the Board in 2016 and currently serves as Vice Chair of the ABOS Oral Examination Committee. He is Chief of Staff of Campbell Clinic Orthopaedics and Professor at the University of Tennessee-Campbell Clinic Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Biomedical Engineering, where he specializes in orthopaedic sports medicine.

She is Professor and Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs and Quality for the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Penn State Bone and Joint Institute, where she specializes in shoulder and elbow surgery.

John M. Flynn, MD, is Director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Flynn was elected to the Board in 2014 and serves as Chair of the ABOS Maintenance of Certification Committee. He is Neil E. Green Professor and Vice Chairman of Orthopaedics and Chief of Pediatric Orthopaedics at Vanderbilt University, where he specializes in pediatric orthopaedics.

Scott E. Porter, MD, MBA, is Director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Porter was elected to the Board in 2017 and serves as Vice Chair of the ABOS Credentials Committee. He is Vice President of Equity and Inclusion, Greenville Health System, where he specializes in bone and soft tissue tumors.

Ann E. Van Heest, MD, is Director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Van Heest was elected to the Board in 2015 and serves as Chair of the ABOS Graduate Medical Education and Subspecialty Committees. She is Professor and Vice-Chair of Education, in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Minnesota, where she practices as a hand surgeon, specializing in pediatric upper extremity.

He is Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, Florida, where he specializes in hand and microvascular surgery.

Wayne J. Sebastianelli, MD, is Director-Elect of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Sebastianelli was elected to the Board in 2018. He is the Kalenak Professor in Orthopaedics at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Medical Director, Penn State Sports Medicine, where he specializes in orthopaedic sports medicine.
