American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery

Board of Directors

The Board consists of 21 members which include 12 Directors, six Senior Directors, two Directors-Elect, and one Public Director. All Directors  serve one seven-year term with most serving an additional three years as Senior Directors. The Public Director may serve two three-year terms.

Nominations come from the American Orthopaedic Association, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and the American Medical Association. Each organization nominates four physicians two out of every three years and the Board elects one candidate from each slate.

Gregory A. Mencio, MD

Gregory A. Mencio, MD, is President of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Mencio was elected to the Board in 2015 and has served as Chair of the ABOS Credentials and Research Committees. He is Neil E. Green Professor of Orthopaedics and Chief of Pediatric Orthopaedics at Vanderbilt University, where he specializes in pediatric orthopaedics.

Ann E. Van Heest, MD

Ann E. Van Heest, MD, is Vice President of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Van Heest was elected to the Board in 2015 and has served as Chair of the ABOS Graduate Medical Education and Subspecialty Committees. She is Professor and Vice-Chair of Education, in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Minnesota, where she practices as a hand surgeon, specializing in pediatric upper extremity.

April D. Armstrong, MD

April D. Armstrong, MD, is President-Elect of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Armstrong was elected to the Board in 2016 and has served as Chair of the ABOS Written Examinations and Graduate Medical Education Committees. She is Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Penn State Bone and Joint Institute, where she specializes in shoulder and elbow surgery.

Frederick M. Azar, MD

Frederick M. Azar, MD, is Secretary of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Azar was elected to the Board in 2016 and has served as Chair of the ABOS Oral Examination Committee. He is Chief of Staff of Campbell Clinic Orthopaedics and Professor at the University of Tennessee-Campbell Clinic Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Biomedical Engineering, where he specializes in orthopaedic sports medicine.

James D. Kang, MD

James D. Kang, MD, is Treasurer of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and serves as Chair of the ABOS Maintenance of Certification and Research Committees. Dr. Kang was elected to the Board in 2017 . He is the Thornhill Family Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School and Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he specializes in spine surgery.

Dr. Guyton was elected to the Board in 2020. He is Director of the Foot and Ankle Division in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Union Memorial Hospital where he specializes in foot and ankle surgery.

He is the Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Chief of Adult Reconstruction, Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, where he specializes in adult reconstruction surgery.

He is Vice President of Organizational Equity and Inclusion, Prisma Health, where he specializes in bone and soft tissue tumors.

Wayne J. Sebastianelli, MD, is Director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and serves as Chair of the ABOS Subspecialty Certification and Written Examination Committees. Dr. Sebastianelli was elected to the Board in 2018. He is the Kalenak Professor in Orthopaedics at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Medical Director, Penn State Sports Medicine, where he specializes in orthopaedic sports medicine.

Lisa A. Taitsman, MD, is Director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and serves as Chair of the ABOS Graduate Medical Education Committee and Vice Chair of the ABOS Maintenance of Certification Committee. Dr. Taitsman was elected to the Board in 2019. She is Professor of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, University of Washington School of Medicine, where she specializes in orthopaedic trauma.
