Additional Details on Alternate ABOS Oral Examination Date

On February 17, 2023, the Board of Directors of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) announced its plans to add an alternate Oral Examination date in 2023. The alternate date is meant to provide an option to those examinees dealing with specific life events that make attendance at the July Examination dates not possible.

For those unable to sit for the July Oral Examination due to extenuating life events such as a military deployment, childbirth and pregnancy, medical issues, or family tragedy, a second Oral Examination will be given on Monday, October 9, 2023. The Examination will be held at the AIME Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.

To submit a request to sit for the October Examination, please use this link. The link will take you to an online form that you will need to complete and submit no later than March 20, 2023. There are a limited number of seats available for this alternate examination date. All submissions will be reviewed by the ABOS Credentials Committee and Examinees will be informed of the Committee’s decision on April 28, 2023, when Oral Examination Decision Letters and Selected Case Lists are posted to Candidates’ ABOS Dashboard.

The ABOS will also reserve a small number of Oral Examination seats at the October Examination for those who have extenuating life events that occur closer to the Examination dates in July 2023.

The October Oral Examination will be identical to the July Examination in both form and content. All Candidates will receive their 12 Selected Cases at the same time and have the same deadlines to upload the required documents and images. Please contact the ABOS office with questions and remember to submit the request to utilize the Alternate Date prior to March 20th.
